Week 2

Angels

What do we think when we hear the word angels?
The word angel means messenger
They are created

Angels as related to man
The angels are presently above man
We will never become angels
We are not to worship angels
They rejoice when a sinner repents
They are present when a child of God dies
They watch over and care for God’s children

The angels as related to Christ
Hebrews 1:4-6 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"? And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him.“
The Son is superior to the angels
The angels worship the Son

The Author quotes 7 times from the Old testament
Five are from the book of Psalms
One is from Samuel
One is from Deuteronomy

Hebrews 1:6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him."(NIV)
Again- on the other hand- only a few angels worshipped at the birth of Christ. At the second coming all the angels will worship the Son, indicating the Son’s superiority

Difference between Jesus and  angels
Hebrews 1:7-9 In speaking of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire." But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy."(NIV)

Facts about angels
Hebrews 1:7 In speaking of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire."(NIV)
He makes- “the one making”
God reduces the angels to the forces of nature

Facts about Jesus
Hebrews 1:8-9 But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy."(NIV)

Anointing you with the Oil of Joy
Psalm 45:7
Anointed – set apart
Oil of Joy –
Hebrews 12:2 NIV fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 1:10-14 He also says, "In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end." To which of the angels did God ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"? Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?(NIV)
Hebrews

Hebrews 2:1-4 We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.(NIV)

John 10:28-30  I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one."(NIV)

Danger
This danger is for  every Christian. It is the danger of neglecting his salvation by drifting away from the truth which God has revealed. This truth has to do with the great salvation which we enjoy

The greatness of this salvation
Because of its Author
Christ presented as being superior to all

Because of its effect
Provides purification for sins once and for all
Provides access to the Father (intercession)

The Cause of Drifting
The lure of the past life
       Tempted  to fall away
The difficulties of the present
      persecution
      The forfeiting of certain opportunities
Distorted priority
Failure to understand fully the                             superiority of Christ

Drifting
The Christian will forfeit the blessings that are derived from holding on to the truth of God’s revelation
When we drift, we get less of God then He intended for us to get

Is drifting easy?
Yes,  it requires no effort.
Drifting away
Proverbs 4:20-23 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.(NIV)
